Deep and Cold
"Blue distance" refers to the phenomenon of distant objects, particularly mountains, appearing blue. This is due to the scattering of light by atmospheric particles, which causes the blue light to dominate the color of the object as it appears to observers from a distance. It's also a phrase used to describe the feeling of longing for things far away or the feeling of being separated from something desired, as described by Rebecca Solnit in A Field Guide to Getting Lost.
