Looking For Mary

A song about looking for signs.

Back in April 2005, people in Chicago flocked to see what they believed to be the palimpsest of the Virgin Mary at an underpass in Lakeview, but was just a water stain. People thought it looked like a woman with a veil. (We see what we believe what we should see, or that things up here  before us as being suffused with meaning, i.e. there are no random events).

***

She’s home again
She comes to take the pain away from them
Relax, she's here
It's not just what you've seen in the mirror
Somewhere off in the mist
A shape of her will appear
You know you've seen it before
But you failed to believe your eyes

Collapsed, in fear
Nothing's ever seemed to be so near
Stay the night
Darkness only pushes you towards the light
No room for doubt
In places or in time
We navigate while blind
But arrive just in time

Convinced, it’s true
We replace the old with the new
We know it's clear
When love becomes the opposite of fear
No room for doubt
In places or in time
We navigate while blind
But arrive just in time

We’re all looking for Mary
And sometimes when we find her
We always lose her again

My version on piano, no vocal.
