It'll Never Be Nebraska

No matter how hard you try to replicate something that worked for someone else, it won't necessarily be the same for you. You can't replicate the spirit of Springsteen's Nebraska or Joni Mitchell's Blue. Masterpieces can appear over time without the hand of an artist. It is the public that makes it, or lets them fade out. An artist can revisit their Nebraskas as a form of nostalgia, but like Chrissie Hynde's My City Was Gone, the city she knew was paved over by progress.
When people tell you
About their dreams
How much is untrue?
It's an individual blue
There will always be a song
With a life all its own
Sound can be a song all by itself
It'll never be Nebraska
Or even a Blue
They say "It’s all about you"
But it always is just about you
The same old ground
Takes another round
Landmarks tend to fade over time
Went back to Ohio
Land of industrial iron
The cities were gone
A time out of mind
It'll never be Nebraska
Or even a Blue
They say "It’s all about you"
But it always is just about true
You'll never get back to Kansas
If you never lived there before
From Omaha to Laurel Canyon
Heartland to the shore
You might hear the music
But you'll never get the tune
Beautiful errors, just inches out of true
It'll never be Nebraska
Or even a Blue
They say "It’s all about you"
But it always is just about true
